OKLAHOMA CITY — Police are on the lookout for a man who raped a young mother early Wednesday morning in southwest Oklahoma City. The victim says her 2-year-old son was only a few feet away while the attack happened.

This crime began with a knock at the door in the 600 block of S.W. 30th St.

The victim and her son had been watching a movie.

Now, experts hope the mother seeks professional help because it could help her son.

“Fortunately, she did not sustain any major injuries in this assault,” Sgt Jennifer Wardlow says.

However, the 20-year-old victim in this case did say she was choked prior to being raped.

The attack began as soon as she opened her front door, around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday.

“The suspect actually shoved his way, forced himself into the home,” Wardlow says.

According to a police report, the 250-pound suspect said, “Let me see what you got.”

He then pushed her into a bedroom and raped her.

The woman’s 2-year-old son was not injured but was still in the home during the attack.

“She stated that her son, she believes, was awake at the time but he was actually in the living room when the assault occurred,” Wardlow says.

Experts say witnessing an attack like this can be traumatic for children of all ages.

“Children may have this fear they were unable to protect mom and a feeling of helplessness,” Karla Docter says, Senior Director of Sexual Assault Services with the YWCA.

She says all rape victims should seek counseling immediately because children may model their own reaction to the crime after their mother’s reaction.

“The child is going to react to how mom presents herself after she has gone through something so traumatic,” Docter says.

Experts say 80 percent of the time, the victim is familiar with the attacker.

This woman says she had never seen the man before.

The victim told police there had been utility work in her front yard for several days.

Thursday, a crew told us they had never seen a man who matched the suspect’s description.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, 5’10” and 250 pounds.

He has short red hair and a red full beard.

He has a three-inch scar on his left cheek and a tattoo on the inner part of his right forearm.

Call police if this description sounds familiar.

Docter says the YWCA has counseling services, support groups, anything a survivor of rape needs to take control of their lives again.
