OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA -- It started with a mother's worst nightmare. "I got a phone call one morning," recalls Shelly Henry. "And it was a car full of girls," says Shelly's daughter Kara Henry.
There was a car accident on the way to school. Kara sat in the front passenger seat. When she drove to the accident scene Shelly thought the worst. "All I saw was a field of red lights." Kara remembers, "I was just in so much pain. I couldn't feel my legs." "I thought she was gone," says Shelly.
15 year old Kara suffered a shattered vertebra in the accident. Doctors told Shelly her daughter might not walk, and that if the did there would always be pain. Henry describes her feelings . "It just takes everything that's inside of you and rips it out."
A single mother of 3, Shelly was in pre-med at the time. Then she went to work on another goal, applying her knowledge, studies, and a mother's love to her daughter's debilitating injury. Kara remembers how she felt. "I was just a little ball of pain," she says. "So I didn't have a choice," says Shelly. "I had to find something."
She came out of her research with a device that combined laser, LED light, and electrical stimulation. Kara was her first patient. "It helps elevate the energy in the nerve so it takes away the pain sensation immediately," says Henry. Kara says, "With the laser treatments I was at point where I could manage it."
Eleven years since the accident and Shelly never became the doctor she imagined. She became a businesswoman. Neurolumen is a products that Henry says helps hundreds of patients who walk in with pain or circulation problems and who then walk out with an answer. "It gives the body the energy it needs to heal," she says.
It's been more than a decade since her doctors said Kara would never be pain free, that she would never live a normal life, or be able to have children. Kara's daughter Lilly is 2 now. The capacity of a mother's love, in this case, was powerful enough to give life twice. "Yeah," says Kara thankfully. "Mom's get it done."
