Weleetka murders suspect in court for fiancee’s murder
OKEMAH, Okla. – The prime suspect in the murders of two little girls in Weleetka faced a judge in another killing.
It was nearly four years ago that 13-year-old Taylor Paschal-Placker and 11-year-old Skyla Whitaker were gunned down along a desolate road.
Their murders went unsolved for years.
Kevin Sweat was eventually connected to the crime and charged with first-degree murder.
Meanwhile, grisly new details are emerging about a second killing Sweat is also charged in, the murder of his fiance in 2011.
Ashley Taylor’s family said Kevin Sweat was her first and only boyfriend.
Just barely in her twenties, Taylor never lived to see the wedding day she thought she’d have with Sweat.
Prosecutors said he took that from her when he took her life in July 2011.
Tuesday Taylor’s family sat in the same courtroom with the man they believe brutally killed her.
Several witnesses took the stand including Sweat’s father, aunt, investigators and Taylor’s mother.
Authorities said they found a four-foot chopping ax inside the trunk of Sweat’s car and her wallet inside the glove compartment after Taylor went missing.
They also said Sweat changed his story several times when asked about the last time he saw Taylor.
Investigators said, at first, Sweat told them he and Taylor got into a fight and he left her on the side of a road.
That story eventually changed and Sweat claimed he stabbed Taylor in the stomach and pushed her into a lake.
Investigators said they never found her body in the water but believe they found her remains in a burn pile located on the property of Sweat’s father.
Investigators said Sweat was hesitant about breaking off his relationship with Taylor because she knew about his involvement in the death of Skylar Whitaker and Taylor Paschel-Placker.
The defense asked the judge to dismiss the case against Sweat because they believe the cause and manner of Taylor’s death is unclear.
The judge disagreed and bound the case over for a first-degree murder trial.
