OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Oklahoma City man is taken into custody after police said he took spanking a child in his care too far.
Randall Allen, 43, was arrested at Children's Hospital on Monday.
Police said Allen and another adult took in a 6-year-old boy to be treated for a bed wetting problem.
While doctors examined him, they found purple bruises on his bottom.
"He (the boy) was struck with a paddle numerous times, enough to cause severe bruising and swelling on the bum," OKC Police Msgt. Gary Knight said.
Detectives interviewed both adults.
News Channel 4 tried to reach Allen by phone and even stopped by his house to get his side of the story.
A woman there at the time did not want to speak to us.
Based on comments Allen made to investigators, he may not have considered the punishment abusive.
Family therapist Donnie Van Curen said, "In many cases, if the parent believes they are abusing a child, they typically don't bring them to the hospital."
However, he advises parents and caregivers to evaluate their method of punishment.
Van Curen said, "Spanking doesn't necessarily equate to abuse and spanking is not an indication of an abusive parent but there is a fine line."
He said that line can be easily crossed if parents aren't careful.
"With all discipline, you have to consider the child's age and what you're trying to teach them," Van Curen said.
Allen was issued a $10,00 bond and faces at least one count of child abuse.
