OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Oklahoma City man's weekend starts off with a bang and not the good kind.
Police said they got word of a man at Southwest Medical Center who was bleeding profusely from his groin Saturday around 9 a.m.
The man, identified as 36-year-old Tavares Donnell Colbert, said it happened as he was heading to the 7-Eleven parking lot at S.E. 44th St. and Shields to sell a gun.
He wanted to make sure the gun was working and pulled over to check it.
According to police reports, as he pulled it out of the case it fired and hit his penis.
In a panic, Colbert said he drove himself to the hospital.
OKC Police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said that is when officers were contacted.
"Through their investigation they found out Colbert had numerous felony convictions obviously making it illegal for him to possess a firearm. We do see people going to the hospital with accidental shootings but it's not necessarily common for it to lead to somebody's arrest as it did in this case," Wardlow said.
Colbert's wound was not life threatening.
He has since been released from the hospital and is now in the Oklahoma County Jail.
