Troopers say Heat Caused Accident
CANADIAN COUNTY, Okla. — Highway patrol troopers say the extreme heat likely caused a fatal motorcycle accident along I-40 Saturday afternoon.
Charles Allen, 65, died early Sunday morning from injuries he sustained when he fell off his bike around 3 p.m. Saturday.
The outside temperature was 104 degrees.
Trooper Terry Chestnut responded to the accident just east of Garth Brooks Blvd. in Canadian County.
Witnesses described to Trooper Chestnut what happened moments before Allen fell off his bike.
“He took his do-rag off and wiped his forehead like he was hot and having problems,” Trooper Chestnut said.
Charles Allen, or “Big Charlie,” as family called him, had no medical problems.
“Both of the witnesses, they both think it was caused because of the heat. He was 65 years old. They both think it was heat related. And talking to the hospital and he didn’t have heart conditions, so that leads me to believe even more, it was probably heat related,” Trooper Chestnut said.
Allen’s daughter, Miranda Bartholomew, said her dad has been riding motorcycles for as long as she can remember.
“I mean, he just loved his family so much and he loved to ride and he loved our country, he served in Vietnam,” said Bartholomew.
She said when the accident happened, he was on his way back from a funeral in Hinton.
Bartholomew said her dad could ride a motorcycle with one finger and it had to have been something, like the heat, that overtook him quickly.
She hopes his untimely death serves as a reminder for others in this extreme heat.
“To be safe, drink a lot of water, don’t stay out for a lot of time and just wear a helmet,” she said.
Allen leaves behind three kids, eight grand-kids and four great grand-children.
“I know he’s in heaven with my mom now and he’s at peace where he’d want to be,” Bartholomew said.
She said her dad always rode in his full leather gear and never wore a helmet unless he was in a state with a law requiring it.
Troopers said it’s difficult to tell if he’d been wearing a helmet if there would have been a different outcome.
