Gym closes without warning
OKLAHOMA CITY — Customers and former employees are shocked that area Tan & Tone Americas have closed their doors.
Employees said that managers found broken keys in the lock of numerous locations.
They are unable to open the facilities and can’t get any personal items out of the buildings.
Some employees said they found out Sunday that they were going to be let go.
Many former employees are out money as well.
“We were also informed that we aren’t getting paid for the last week of work. We’ve really been pressed this last week of work to get members, sell products do upgrades and we’re pretty much just lying to customers,” a former employee said.
Some customers believe gym management knew they were closing, but still took their money anyway.
Many now want their money back.
“They take our money, you know, because of their financial situation so it’s like they didn’t care about us at all,” customer Elaine Lyons said.
Julie Bays with the Attorney General’s Office said customers’ money may not be lost.
“Under our Health Spa Act, a business like Tan and Tone has in their contract that if they were to go out of business they are required to refund any money that is paid in advance. I believe that they have 30 days to refund the money.”
We did make several attempts to contact officials with Tan and Tone America.
At the corporate office in Oklahoma City, no one answered the door.

It is with great sadness that after twenty-six years of serving Oklahoma City, that we must announce the closing of the metro Tan & Tone America locations. We had hoped that the revenues would begin to increase, however they have continued to decline. We have exhausted every possible financial resource to save the company, including the value of our personal life insurance and retirement funds, but we were still unable to establish the necessary capital for the company’s survival. This weekend we received financial advice from several sources and unfortunately we have been advised that the company is no longer viable.
To our customers: We thank you for your business. We hope all of you will continue the healthy habits you have established with Tan & Tone America. It has been a pleasure serving you all these years.
To our employees: We would like to express how much we appreciate each and every one of you for all you have done to take care of our customers and business. As this door in your life closes, we pray that another door opens with greater opportunity and personal satisfaction for your future.
