Wildfire threatens city
GEARY, Okla — A fire in Blaine and Canadian county continues to have hotspots after burning 1,000 acres of land.
Fire Chief Choape said all local crews remain on the scene controlling the flames that are now in the black.
The fire started Thursday afternoon in a canyon in Canadian County.
Rough terrain made it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze as it made its way to the nearby city of Geary.
“This whole area was engulfed in flames. The fire department did do a remarkable job of putting the flames out. It’s been kind of crazy,” Jeff Hitchcock said.
Hitchcock was a volunteer at the scene.
Emergency crews evacuated several rural homes around the Geary area.
Geary City Hall became a makeshift shelter for the evacuees.
Nobody was injured.
