Coach accused of videotaping girls locker room sentenced
OKLAHOMA CITY — A former teacher and coach at a metro high school, accused of videotaping young victims inside the girls locker room, is sentenced for the crime.
Michael Hestand previously pleaded guilty to seven criminal counts, including taking clandestine photos.
Thursday a judge sentenced Hestand to serve 17 years behind bars.
The judge told the admitted pervert he’s a disgrace and an embarrassment.
Hestand ignored any questions on his way to prison.
The former softball coach at Western Heights High School was forced to leave the school in 2009 for allegedly downloading porn onto a school computer.
In 2010, a different coach at the school discovered a camera used to record the girls locker room with tapes of partially dressed and nude teenage victims.
Prosecutors also detailed in court the former teacher would take lewd upskirt pictures of students in his classroom and disturbing images of child porn were found on his home computer.
“I believe Mr. Hestand was remorseful for his actions,” defense attorney Justin Lowe said.
Hestand’s attorney asked for a suspended sentence to allow the former educator to get treatment for his sexual addictions.
However, Judge Ray Elliott pointed out educators who violate the public’s trust must be held accountable.
“I believe he deserved the opportunity for rehabilitation. If he was on a 15- or 20-year suspended sentence and violated it, he would’ve been revoked entirely,” Lowe said.
Hestand did not deny what he did but added he did not molest any of the victims.
He did not have a prior criminal record.
After Hestand left Western Heights, he worked for a brief time at Mustang public schools.
The judge also said that district should be ashamed of its hiring practices.
