Man arrested for cooking during burn
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK –An Oklahoma City man spent a night in jail after cooking in his backyard last week.
Justin Popejoy said he was cooking pork chops for his family in a fire pit when police arrested him.
Use of a fire pit is a violation of the statewide burn ban.
Popejoy asked officers if he could receive a fine but was taken to jail instead.
Popejoy admits it was wrong to cook in an open-pit during the burn ban, but said he simply didn’t realize things were that serious.
Popejoy said, “ I’ve been smelling people out cooking, and charcoaling, and I figured well, it wasn’t that bad”.
Popejoy doesn’t plan on doing any outside cooking anytime soon and hopes his story is a warning for his fellow Oklahomans.
