OKLAHOMA CITY -- Flames broke out at a vacant metro apartment complex Friday morning.
Eight units were damaged in the 7400 block of N.W. 10th St.
Oklahoma City Battalion Fire Chief Dewey Schmidt said they have to be very careful with these type of structures.
"My understanding is this apartment complex has been vacant since 2009," he said. "On an apartment complex like this we're not sure of the structural integrity is inside so we're very hesitant to send crews inside the structure."
They've actually been called to this vacant structure for fires a number of times and Schmidt believes there will be more to come with the change of seasons.
"With the temperatures dropping outside, for someone who is homeless that may be an area of refuge here at the complex," he said.
The cause is still under investigation.
The owner of the complex lives out-of-state and is being notified of the fire.
