Body found in burned Shawnee home, police say murder
SHAWNEE, Okla. – Shawnee police are investigating an apparent murder.
Investigators found a man’s body inside a home damaged by fire.
Police said the victim may have suffered injuries before the fire.
One person has been arrested in the case.
It all started after several neighbors and a postal worker saw the fire break out.
Once inside the home, investigators found a man’s body with injuries not consistent with the fire.
“We are just in the preliminary stages of the investigation but I can say we are treating this as a homicide,” Shawnee Police Chief Russell Frantz said.
The Shawnee police chief confirms the blaze did not cause any significant damage to the home.
The fire may have been set to cover up a crime.
“It was pretty self-contained,” Frantz said. ”It was more of a smoldering-type situation.”
“There’s some sick people out there, real sick,” neighbor Tracy Green said. “Hopefully they’ll catch whoever done it.”
At this point, investigators said they don’t believe the fire led to the victim’s death.
The victim’s name has not officially been released.
Police said they’re waiting until they can notify family members.
Shawnee police did call in the OSBI to help with their investigation.
