Sister gives man ultimate gift
OKLAHOMA CITY – As one Oklahoma City family gathered at the table on Thanksgiving, they were thinking of the moment when they will gather at the hospital Monday for a transplant surgery.
Bill Hall, 63, is receiving a life-saving gift; his sister is giving him one of her kidneys.
“When you have something like this happen, it changes everybody’s life because family all feels the same way about somebody who needs something,” Hall said.
The father of two was diagnosed with type one diabetes to years ago.
He knew he’d need a kidney one day and his sister, Barbara Smith, said she had a premonition she’d one day help him.
“I was just ready to do it,” Smith said. “Kept telling him I’ll do it tomorrow.”
When Hall was put on the donor list in May, his seven brothers and sisters jumped in to be tested.
Smith was a perfect match.
“I’m just glad it’s me, I’m the one that’s able to do it,” Smith said.
Smith said she knows how important it is to be a donor.
The family lost their youngest brother 10 years ago and his organs were used to save lives.
“We’ve met the people that got his organs and it’s just changed their lives,” Smith said.
Hall said that’s exactly what his sister will do for him.
“There’s no way for me to repay her in my lifetime,” Hall said.
Grateful for the promise of better health, Hall and his sister will soon share a new bond they once only shared in their heart.
“There’s just no way to describe what I feel inside about the gift she’s given,” he said.
