Filling students’ bellies over winter break

OKLAHOMA CITY – For many of you out there, school is out for the holidays.

That’s an exciting thing for most children, but for some, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma said that means going without food.

For many Oklahoma City students, pantries are empty at home so the school provides their only meal of the day.

To make up for time off for winter break, the Food Bank steps in to provide the kids lunches.

Last year, the Food Bank helped 257 students.

This year, that number has nearly doubled to more than 400 children.

“It’s a very serious issue,” spokesperson Angie Gaines said. “We have coordinators that tell us about elementary school kids who are licking crumbs off the floor because they don’t have any food at home.”

The Food Bank said many of the families don’t make a living wage and simply can’t make ends meet.

That’s why volunteers, young and old, step in at the Food Bank to pack kids’ lunches.

Students as old 18 can pick them up every day over the break.

Since 90 percent of OKC public school students are on the free or reduced cost lunch program, the Food Bank fears more children are going hungry over the holidays because they didn’t know volunteers were making the lunches.

Anyone can go to 12 different locations from Dec. 17 to Dec. 21.
