Police investigate rape claims in Edmond
EDMOND, Okla. –Police in Edmond are looking into a horrific crime against a university student who claims she was followed, bound and raped just off of the University of Central Oklahoma campus.
Police say the international student had just finished some late night shopping at the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market near it 2nd & Bryant on Christmas Eve.
As she was walking home, investigators believe the young woman was followed.
Shortly after returning to her townhouse near Blackwelder & Campbell, authorities say the man broke in, tied her up and raped her.
Taylor Egger, another student at UCO, said, “Oh my gosh. I’m friends with lots of international students so that freaks me out a lot.”
Now, Edmond police are scouring the area for leads and asking for the public’s help identifying the attackers.
Jenny Monroe, Edmond police spokesperson, said, “We are pulling surveillance video from all the places she was earlier in the evening. We’re asking anyone if they were in the area midnight Christmas near 2nd and Bryant, if you saw someone following her, anybody with any possible information.”
Police believe this was a random assault on a young woman, walking alone at night.
It now has fellow UCO students re-thinking the safety of this quiet neighborhood, east of campus.
Egger said, “That scares me a lot. People tell me to be careful and I say, ‘oh, it will never happen. I’ll be fine.’ But it’s real. More real than I’d like to think it is.”
There is a Crime Stoppers reward for anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of the suspects.
