EDMOND, Okla. – Che Douglas is a biomedical engineering student at University of Central Oklahoma.
She’s on the rowing team and competes in beauty pageants.
Posing for pictures is something she does well, so well she won a ‘Miss Photogenic’ award at her last pageant.
But those good genes have landed her an unwanted title… Escort.
Douglas told News Channel 4 she got a message Thursday afternoon from a friend telling her about her new online status.
“He said, ‘You’re an escort,’ and I’m like, there is no way,” Douglas said. “He gave me the link and I looked it up and sure enough my pictures were there. It said I was a ‘mixed Canadian beauty.'”
That’s not all the profile stated; on backpage.com it gives sexual preferences and number to call featuring pictures Douglas said someone snatched from her Facebook page.
“If he messaged me about this 20 minutes after it was posted I wondered who else that I know has seen this picture,” she said.
Douglas tried to find out who was behind the post.
She called the number.
“She just hung up a couple of times and then I finally got through to her I asked her where she is located and stuff like that and she just hung up on me,” she said.
Social media expert Patrick Allmond said once you post something, you virtually give up rights.
“The fact is all these social media sites are free,” she said. “What people don’t realize is they (the company) actually own the rights to the images uploaded.”
But there are two things you can do to be proactive.
Allmond said, “You can do a Google image search and look for pictures similar to the one you upload; it will show you if any of them are being used somewhere else.”
He said you can also set up Google alerts so you get an email every time your name is used anywhere online.
Douglas is now trying to prevent that post from tainting her reputation.
“My mom raised me completely opposite of what these people are trying to portray me as,” she said. “I’m not an escort; I work very hard and legally earn money to support myself.”
News Channel 4 called the number listed.
The person on the other end agreed to meet us and gave us a price for services.
Edmond Police are investigating this case.
