OKLAHOMA CITY - A metro veterinary clinic is wondering what happened after a young dog with severe injuries was found abandoned behind the clinic.
Lucy Wyant, with Swaim Veterinary Clinic, said, "She's a sweetheart. We call her 'Lucy's Angel' now."
The beautiful little pup has been through quite a journey, though exactly what happened to her remains unknown.
Louann Ervin first spotted the dog early Monday morning back behind the Swaim Veterinary Clinic.
Ervin said, "I couldn't tell anything was wrong with it until I got closer and it ran away from me. It could only run on its front two legs."
The pup was found by a trailer behind the clinic.
Ervin immediately called Wyant to help.
Wyant said, "I crawled underneath here (pointing to a trailer) and went and got her."
When they finally reached the dog, they never imagined her condition.
The dog's back paws were both broken.
One was ripped open; her bones were showing through the wound.
Wyant said, "This dog was most likely run over."
The wounds were likely less than 24 hours old.
Purple medicine was on her paws, leading Wyant to believe someone may have tried to help her.
The dog, likely a pug-chihuahua mix, may also have damage to her back and will likely need one, if not both, back paws amputated.
Wyant said, "It's cold and it's so dangerous for this little girl to be out there. So, please people quit doing that."
If you have an animal and for whatever reason cannot take care of it anymore, you're encouraged to take it to the local animal shelter.
The shelter has cages available after hours where animals can be dropped off, no questions asked.
The Swaim Veterinary Clinic is going to do what they can to save the little pup's life.
They said she will likely have an expensive vet bill.
Anyone who would like to help cover the cost of the surgery she will need is encouraged to contact the clinic directly.
