OKLAHOMA CITY – A former employee is accused of embezzling $280,000 from Our Sisters’ Closet, which is run by the YWCA Oklahoma City.
An audit of financial statements revealed that the money was missing from the retail store, according to YWCA officials.
The evidence has now been turned over to law enforcement.
“The YWCA management and Board of Directors place top priority on fiscal responsibility and financial transparency, and although we have strict financial policies and procedures in place to prevent the misuse of our funds, we have been the victim of embezzlement,” Jan Peery said, CEO of YWCA Oklahoma City.
The investigation does not involve funds received through capital campaign contributions, grants or other donations.
Our Sisters’ Closet provides funding for programs that help women and children in Central Oklahoma.
Charges have not been filed because the investigation is still ongoing.
YWCA Oklahoma City plans on filing a civil lawsuit to recover the embezzled funds.
