‘Waiting Game’ in hostage standoff
MIDLAND CITY, AL — A standoff between police and a man holding a 5-year-old boy hostage is now in its second full day near Midland City, Alabama. Authorities say a retired truck driver grabbed the kindergartner off a school bus after shooting and killing the driver Tuesday afternoon.
The boy, Ethan, who turns 6 in a few weeks, remains captive in an underground bunker on his abductor’s property. The man holding him hostage has been identified as 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes.
Investigators say he boarded the stopped school bus and demanded that a few random children come with him. The bus driver, 66-year-old Charles Poland Junior blocked his way refusing to let any children go.
Dykes then shot Poland several times, killing him. Dykes then grabbed Ethan, who may have fainted, and took him to his property.
Neighbors describe Dykes as an anti-government loner and survivalist. He had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to face a charge of menacing neighbors with a gun as they drove by his house.
Investigators describe the situation as a “waiting game”, noting that Dykes has spent several days in his bunker in the past.
