OKLAHOMA CITY – A hit-and-run driver is still on the loose after a deadly crash Wednesday morning.

Joseph Helmka, 58, was found dead in the roadway at MacArthur Blvd. and 10th St. just before 3 a.m.

Family cried together as police investigated the hit-and-run.

“Knowing someone hit him and just kept going, it’s hard to digest,” his daughter, Jessica Helmka, said.

A passing driver found her father alone in the roadway with his bicycle.

By the time police arrived, it was too late to save him.

“I don’t even have a word for it right now; I’m in shock,” Jessica said.

A grandfather of three and a well-known house painter, his family said Helmka rode his bike everywhere with no problem.

They wonder if weather played a part in the crash.

When Helmka was hit, the fog was dense.

Investigators said whoever hit him might not have seen him.

Still, the family said the driver left Helmka behind.

“You know when you hit a squirrel, you got to know when you hit something much bigger,” Laura Aneshansley said.

“To leave him there, and he’s a human being,” Jessica said. “He could have been alive.”

A convenience store’s cameras point to the intersection where he was found.

His daughter said she hopes that will show how the hit-and-run played out.

Meanwhile, she remembers Helmka as a kind-hearted grandfather.

Jessica had one request for the driver who hit her father.

“Say something so I can have a little more closure knowing what happened because it’s agonizing.”
