Hostage situation unfolds at Alabama middle school
SHELBY COUNTY, Ala.—Four children were held hostage by a gunman who walked into an Alabama middle school.
Now parents are asking questions about the school’s security.
Chelsea Middle School went into lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a man with a semi-automatic handgun got into the building.
He was able to hold four female students hostage for about 20 minutes.
Investigators say the man, who was in his early 20s, held the girls at gunpoint before speaking to investigators.
Fortunately, a deputy sheriff was able to negotiate their safe release and the gunman’s surrender.
The motive is still unknown at this time.
