UPDATE: The pastor, Michael Scott Elder, was charged with the murder of his son-in-law, 27-year-old Gary Davidson, Friday.
According to the affidavit, Elder and Davidson were fighting over a truck when the shots were fired.
OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma City pastor is the surprising suspect in a deadly shooting earlier this week.
Police arrested 53-year-old Michael Elder at a home in the 2700 block of N.W. 12th St. around 5:45 p.m.
They found a man dead at the scene; 27-year-old Gary Davidson.
Davidson is Elder’s son-in-law.
Elder is a pastor at The Cross Baptist Church in southwest Oklahoma City.
“It appears there was some sort of a domestic dispute there at that residence before ultimately shots were fired,” OKC Police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said.
Police aren’t releasing a motive but we learned Davidson had just filed for divorce from Elder’s daughter Tuesday, the day before the shooting.
They said the scene of the crime was where Davidson was staying with his girlfriend.
A family member at that house did not want to speak to us and neither did anyone at Elder’s home.
“I’m really shocked that he’s involved in anything like that,” Carlene Buscemi said, who lives across the street from Elder’s church. “I mean, he is a pastor.”
“We don’t know the whole story but still, you know, I don’t think a pastor should pick up a gun and shoot somebody,” she said. “There’s other ways to handle it.”
The Cross Baptist Church did not return our calls and the doors were locked Thursday afternoon.
Court records show Davidson pleaded guilty last June to transporting a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle.
Charges against Elder had not been filed at the Oklahoma County Courthouse as of Thursday afternoon.
