Well-known former surgeon general dies

HANOVER, N.H. (CNN)– A former U.S. surgeon general has died at the age of 96.
Dartmouth College announced the passing of former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.
He served as surgeon general from 1982 to 1989 and was known for his outspoken nature on public health issues.
Koop is best known for his work around AIDS.
He wrote a brochure about the disease that was sent to 107 million households in the United States, making it the largest public health mailing ever.
Koop is survived by his wife, three children and eight grandchildren.
