Abandoned school bringing problems to neighborhood

OKLAHOMA CITY – Page Woodson High School has been abandoned for years.

Some are glad to see that the building has lasted.

John Newton was a former student at the school.

“It`s still standing, that`s what makes me feel good because when you pass by it you still see history there,” Newton said.

But others in the neighborhood consider it a nuisance.

Harold Jefferson lives right across the street from the school.

“I complain all year long about this building,” he said.

Even though the school is boarded up and there is a fence around most of the property, neighbors said it is not enough because people are still finding ways to get in.

“You board it up, they take another board down and go in tomorrow,” Jefferson said. “I’ve seen the police come and take this group out then another group will come.”

Jefferson said he’s always calling the police about suspicious activity he sees going on around and in the school.

He said, “They break in different times of the night, they go in, different age groups.”

Unfortunately, it’s only getting worse.

Jefferson said he’s seen people doing everything from theft to vandalism at the school.

“One night it was like 16 to 18 people,” he said. “I mean, you can board it up, they tear the boards off. You got a fence around it, so what?”

Not only is Jefferson concerned about keeping his neighborhood safe, he’s also worried about the people who are breaking in.

“For their safety, because they get in and could do something or get hurt,” he said.

Jefferson said there has been a steady wave of people breaking into Page Woodson High School all year long and there’s only one thing that will put an end to it all.

“Security,” He said. “Put security personnel on the premises. That`s all you can do. Someone to say, ‘Hey, you can’t go in there.'”

If you would like to purchase the building, it’s for sale starting at $800,000.
