Norman man arrested in death of 23-month-old toddler
NORMAN, Okla. – A Norman man is arrested for allegedly killing a 23-month-old toddler.
The suspect, Jeremy Howard, is the boyfriend of the victim’s mother.
He is behind bars accused of murder.
Norman police said the young victim suffered a variety of injuries.
It happened inside a Norman apartment complex.
That’s where 23-month-old Kiyla Rose Hosler suffered fatal injuries last week.
“It’s just heartbreaking really,” neighbor Ricky Harmon said.
Neighbors like Ricky said they’re sickened by news of the girl’s death.
“Anytime a kid has to suffer like that, it tears your heart out, you know,” Harmon said.
Norman police arrested Jeremy Howard at his apartment after receiving a 911 call from the 25-year-old suspect.
“The call was made by Mr. Howard actually,” Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said. “He called and said he had an unresponsive 23-month-old child.”
The medical examiner’s office has yet to determine the victim’s exact cause of death but police said Howard served as the sole caretaker the night of the killing.
“We believe she died of injuries sustained at the hands of Mr. Howard,” Easley said.
Neighbors at the apartment said Howard and the victim’s mother would frequently discipline Kiyla and her older sister.
“They were always yelling at the kids and stuff like that,” Harmon said. “You could tell they were very strict.”
For now it remains unclear what may have caused Howard to allegedly abuse and kill the young victim.
“It’s not fun but what we’re interested in ultimately is justice,” Easley said.
The suspect does have a previous conviction for domestic assault and battery, as well as two separate protective orders filed against him this year.
He remains behind bars without bond.
Formal charges should be filed later this week.
