OKC residents evacuated for tank battery fires
OKLAHOMA CITY - Lightning may have been the cause of two tank battery fires and evacuations overnight.
One at N.E. 4th St. and Bryant, the other one at near 9th St. and Lottie.
We’re told both tanks contained several volatile chemicals including alcohol, methanol, and a couple other hazardous and highly-flammable materials.
Because of that, crews ending up evacuating about a half-mile area around the tanks; about 23 people were asked to leave the area.
Luckily they were able to contain that fire before any real damage was caused.
A 1,000-gallon propane tank near the tanks began venting off when the lightning hit.
No injuries were reported.
