STILLWATER – With Oklahoma State finishing up football practice with Saturday afternoon’s “Spring Finale” in Stillwater, there’s no question who the starting quarterback for the Cowboys is: Enid senior Clint Chelf. However, even though Chelf rose from 3rd team to the starting spot a season ago, and kept his #1 position on the depth chart, head coach Mike Gundy says there’s still an open battle going on for the leading quarterback this fall, when the regular season kicks off.
The Pokes are fortunate to have a trio of kids at QB who all won Big 12 Conference games last year. Chelf will start Saturday’s spring game, but Gundy says OSU’s offense will most definitely include plays for Denton, TX sophomore J.W. Walsh under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich (YURR-sitch). And Gundy says former starter Wes Lunt, the 6-4 sophomore who was injured twice last season, looks as good physically as any time since he’s been in Stillwater, so he’s still in the hunt. All three will take meaningful snaps in Saturday’s scrimmage. The 8th year head man talks about a good problem to have: lots of talent at QB-1.
