BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - A young Florida child survived an alligator attack with only cuts and bruises.
It's because his father hit and kicked the gator until he let his son go.
Until Friday, little Joey Welsh had never met an animal he didn't like.
That is until he came dangerously close to this eight-foot alligator at the Loxahatchee Nature National Wildlife Refuge in Boynton Beach.
Dad, Joseph Welsh, and Joey were supposed to get pretty close to the gators during a canoe ride but not this close.
As Joseph was paying to rent one of the boats, his son ran down the hill, captivated by the snake grass.
"Immediately after I heard a splash, I heard him scream and latched on to his right arm like this here,” Joseph said.
While you never want to get between an animal and its young, Joseph proved he would do anything to guard his child, including punching the gator.
His hands are still swollen.
A bystander started kicking the animal in its underbelly until it released little Joey's arm.
After quite a scare and a trip to the hospital, the brave little boy is doing just fine.
Now there’s only one reptile he doesn’t like.
Joey said, "I'm never going to an alligator place; we’re going back to the rivers and the oceans."
Joey survived with only minor scrapes and bruises.
