Neighbors worried boyfriend involved in woman’s death
OKLAHOMA CITY – Officials have released new details on a gruesome discovery over the weekend.
Wednesday police released the identity of a woman whose body was found near Lake Overholser on Saturday.
The 22-year-old victim, Karen De Leon, had been missing for two weeks.
Several neighbors now suspect the woman’s boyfriend, Carlos, may be responsible De Leon’s death.
The boyfriend’s father even has his suspicions.
“He told me he had a premonition that his son did something to her,” neighbor Alex Reynolds said.
According to the police report filed two weeks ago, the victim’s “(mother) got a call from the (victim) asking for the (mother) to come pick her up. The (mother) said the (boyfriend) took the phone and told the (mother) that they were going to leave the state.”
Neighbors said the boyfriend has left the country.
“He’s down in Mexico,” Reynolds said. “Hopefully the Mexican police pick him up and throw away the key on him.”
Police said, right now, investigators can’t say if anyone is to blame for the death.
They also can’t say how the victim died.
“The case has not been ruled a homicide,” OKC Police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said. “It may never be ruled a homicide. Right now we’re working it as a suspicious death.”
“Karen was a mentally challenged young lady,” Reynolds said. “Unfortunately, she tangled up with Carlos. Why? I don’t know.”
Several calls to the victim’s mother were not returned.
So far the state medical examiner’s office has not determined an exact cause of death.
