BOSTON – Three additional suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing have been taken into custody, Boston police said Wednesday.
NBC news is reporting Azamat Tazhayakov, Dias Kadyrbayev and Robel Phillipos are college friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
The federal charge is obstruction of justice; allegedly concealing and destroying a laptop and backpack of fireworks belonging to, then allegedly lying about that to the FBI.
The three were not charged with knowing about the bomb plot or helping prior to the attack.
Before appearing in federal court Wednesday in Boston, two of the three who are from Khazakstan, were held for more than a week on charges they violated terms of their student visas.
After the Boston bombings and Dzhokhar’s arrest, Police swarmed the campus of his college, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Looking for evidence and wondering why Dzhokhar returned to his dorm after the attack.
According to the federal complaint, Dzhokhar told the Khazak students he was not involved in the bombing.
But after he left and they’d seen his photo on TV, they took his laptop and threw his fireworks in a dumpster to protect him.
There’s no allegation they helped earlier in the bomb plot.
But the 19-year-old suspect did allegedly lead three friends into trouble with the FBI.
Authorities searched landfills and did find the backpack but apparently have not yet found the computer.
