Suspect hides in closet, attacks Elk City teen in bedroom
ELK CITY, Okla. – An Elk City teen is recovering after being severely beaten.
The attack happened in her own home; police said they believe the intruder was hiding in her closet.
The young girl is doing better than first expected but her dad said she’s pretty battered and bruised.
The teen’s father, Brian LeGrand, said, “It happened so fast and I thought, ‘Am I going to wake up and this all been a dream?’ I just never woke up.”
It’s a nightmare that started Tuesday night after Brian put all four of his kids to bed.
LeGrand said, “I closed all the bedroom doors and then got back in the living room and I heard a noise, it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.”
Moments later, Brian and his wife heard a scream coming from 17-year-old Mychaela’s room.
“She said she seen somebody and didn’t think anything about it,” Brian said. “She laid her head down and popped back up and he was on top of her and he was hitting her.”
As Brian and his wife ran to Mychaela’s room, a man ran out.
The suspect crossed through another room and out the back door before jumping the fence.
Brian said, “My daughter comes out of the room unrecognizable, covered in blood.”
Mychaela’s nose and right eye socket were broken and her head was gashed open.
Police were able to find the suspect’s hat and a few footprints but they said they do not know why Mychaela was targeted.
Elk City Police Chief Eddie Holland said, “No motive has been determined, no problems with the family, no history.”
Nothing was taken from the home and police said it appears the man went straight to Mychaela room.
Now police and the LeGrand family said they are hoping someone knows the attacker and will turn him in to police.
Holland said, “He’s out there somewhere and someone knows who he is.”
Brian said, “It’s going to be a slow process to get comfortable and there’s not going to be any peace until the guy’s caught.”
Police describe the suspect as a white man in his early 20s with a scruffy, unshaven face.
He had a short haircut was wearing a white men’s tank top undershirt with jeans.
They said they believe he likely had blood on him following the attack.
Mychaela’s dad said they did find an open window with the screen pulled off in another room and thinks that’s how the intruder got in.
