Tornado victims sorting through insurance details

Now that many safety issues have been resolved in those communities destroyed by last week’s tornadoes, residents are also beginning to work with their insurance companies.

One company is defending a relatively new policy, made available two years ago, that is receiving national scrutiny.

“It’s bad, I mean everything is just almost gone,” Moore resident Robert Guidry said Monday.

Guidry is spending his Memorial Day picking up the pieces of his house.

But he did have full coverage on his insurance policy because he didn’t want to risk any out-of-pocket expenses.

“Because if something like this does happen… you can’t cut corners because it will cost you in the end,” Guidry said.

Allstate is one company that has received negative publicity for a House and Home policy, which does not offer full replacement coverage for damaged roofs that are more than ten years old.

They cover the depreciated “actual cash value” of the roof, and the policyholder covers the rest of the cost.

“People are looking for affordable insurance options, especially in this state,” Allstate spokesperson Melinda Wilson said, “and they were looking for a product that can let them pick and choose what they want, in terms of coverage.”

Wilson said the cash value roof reimbursement policy gives customers a less expensive monthly premium.

85% of their six thousand policyholders with House and Home have a relatively new roof and are eligible for full replacement coverage if they want it, she said.

“Most companies have some version of it to give customers the options they need and want, in terms of coverage and price,” Wilson said.

Regardless, Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak urges anyone to contact them if they suspect fraud.

“If they didn’t understand or felt like they were taken advantage of, or the policy wasn’t clearly communicated to them, we’ll be able to look into that as well,” Doak said.

Doak urges consumers to sit down every year with their insurance agent to understand exactly what their policy covers.
