Mom forced to ride out tornado with son in school gym
MOORE, Okla. – As Moore residents try to pick up the pieces from the May 20 tornado, Oklahomans find hope through stories of survival and heroism.
Emily Sutton met a woman that represents both traits.
Nicole Gaither tried to pick up her son from Highland East Jr. High.
When the school refused to release the students, Nicole was forced to ride out the tornado with her son in the school’s gym.
The students climbed out of the debris uninjured and Nicole switched roles from mom to EMT.
As a trained EMT, Nicole went through a nearby neighborhood working on victims for nearly five hours, proving to be a local hero.
