Family returns money found in Moore backyard
MOORE, Okla. – The “Oklahoma Standard” is a phrase born after the 1995 bombing.
It keeps coming back anytime fellow Oklahomans need a helping hand.
When high winds pick up debris there is no telling where it will land but sometimes it lands in front of just the right people.
Oklahomans are finding their neighbors belongings in their backyards and selflessly returning them no matter how much it’s worth.
Friday afternoon, Moore resident Steve Riddle and his grandson walked into Tinker Federal Credit Union’s Norman branch with a muddy, wet envelope.
A bank teller opened the envelope and found $500 in cash.
“Him and his son were cleaning up their backyard and they had some minor damage to their home,” said Norman branch manager Lori Stueven. “They decided that they needed to turn it in to the credit union and get it to its rightful owner.”
Stueven had to lay the cash out on her desk to dry.
The increments of $5, $10 and $20 bills made for a large handful of cash.
Tinker Federal Credit Union shared the news on Facebook where Riddle’s wife confirmed that it was indeed her husband that returned the money.
She says, “He wanted to show our grandson the right thing to do.”
“I noticed that he just kept staring at that money thinking wow that is a lot of money,” said Stueven. “But his dad or his grandfather said that you know this is the right thing to do. This money doesn’t belong to us and we need to get it to its rightful owner.”
They are thinking that the money was drawn from the Moore branch that was completely leveled.
The staff in Norman says Riddle’s selflessness made their day.
“It makes us proud to live here and work here,” said Stueven.
The staff at the Norman branch has sent the Riddles a nice letter and gift in the mail to thank them for returning the money.
If they cannot find the rightful owner they will be donating it to the United Way’s tornado relief efforts.
