Two more arrested for looting in Newalla
CHICKASHA, Okla. – Two more suspects have been arrested for looting near Newalla, bringing the total to six arrested in the past two weeks.
Four of those arrests have been in the past four days.
Cleveland County deputies picked up two Chickasha men, 34-year-old Scotty Young Ash and 23-year-old Johnny Dale Ash, III, for “disturbing a disaster area” Tuesday.
A witness told authorities two men were possibly stealing scrap metal from Woodside Dr. in Newalla, an area hit by the May 19 tornado.
Both men admitted to taken the materials found in their truck and trailer and said they did not have permission from the homeowners.
They told the deputy their friend had permission to take the materials but they couldn’t seem to tell authorities the friend’s name.
The men told authorities they had been taking scraps from the area for the last week.
Both admitting they planned to sell the items to make a profit.
They also told deputies they had made several hundred dollars on previous sales of metal they took from the disaster area.
Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester said taking anything from a declared disaster area without permission of the property owner is illegal.
