Mom arrested for unattended baby, synthetic drugs found
OKLAHOMA CITY — Police arrested an Oklahoma City woman after they said she passed out in the heat Monday for a lengthy amount of time, leaving her baby unattended with her.
It was around 90 degrees outside when officers got a call about an unresponsive woman, lying on the blacktop pavement for quite some time, with her baby. Once officers arrived, they found Ashley O’Grady unconscious.
Officers were able to wake her up at one point, and that’s when O’Grady grabbed a 10 ounce can of Office Depot cleaning duster.
MSgt. Gary Knight, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, said, “Sat up, sprayed some of that into her face, inhaled it and then passed out again.”
After O’Grady was treated and released by EMSA, she was placed under arrest.
Police then found what’s called “Pirate’s Booty” Potpourri in her pocket, which is a type of synthetic drug, along with a pipe.
O’Grady is now facing charges including child abuse, child neglect and child endangerment.
Evangelina Espinosa has lived in the Almonte Apartment complex for seven years and was not surprised to hear about this frightening incident nearby.
Espinosa said, “I feel so sorry for that baby. I hope the baby is alright though.”
She said the complex is busy with people coming and going and says she fears the place she calls home.
Espinosa said, “I don’t even come out. I go to the doctor’s office or go to get something to eat or to get medicines, but other than that I don’t come out.”
Luckily, police say the child is going to be okay after being transported to the children’s hospital for a high temperature.
For Espinosa, she hopes management takes notice of this incident to prevent any future problems.
She said, “They need to be more noticeable in the office of what goes on.”
