You may think you are being healthier when you reach for that sweetener instead of sugar but doctors say that may not be the case.
Experts say many people think artificially sweetened products are healthy and will help them lose weight.
However, some data shows that’s not the case.
An article published in Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism say the products don’t actually satisfy a person’s sweet tooth and people still crave sugary foods.
They suggest limiting the amount of all sweeteners, real or fake, and you won’t be adding those extra calories.
The American Beverage Association released a statement, saying “This is an opinion piece not a scientific study. Low-calorie sweeteners are some of the most studied and reviewed ingredients in the food supply today. They are safe and an effective tool in weight loss and weight management, according to decades of scientific research and regulatory agencies around the globe.”
The association says the information contradicts plenty of other studies including ones published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nutrition Bulletin and International Journal of Obesity.
Those studies showed that artificial sweeteners were an effective way to lose weight.
