UPDATE: Man’s deceased wife’s ashes returned
UPDATE: Mr. Wearmouth’s wife’s ashes were located late this morning in SW OKC, in the 2100 block of SW 46th. A lady contacted police and said she had seen the story on the news and believed the ashes were there. She said they had been left on a step at the apartments.
Officers got there, confirmed the wife’s name on them and they were returned to Don Wearmouth early this afternoon. No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – An elderly Oklahoma City man is sending out a plea to the thieves who burglarized his home Tuesday afternoon. The burglars stole his wife’s ashes.
“When I came here and saw this the sack was over here in the corner, and I thought surely the ashes are in it, but no they weren’t,” said Don Wearmouth.
In the light of afternoon, in the busy Hefner Village neighborhood, thieves broke into Wearmouth’s home while he was at bible study. Police say they kicked in the front door and took Wearmouth’s wedding ring, class ring, other jewelry, a pistol and his wife, Karin’s, remains.
“I don’t care about any of the other, but I sure would like to get her ashes back,” said Wearmouth.
He and Karin were married 27 years. She died last year. The family hadn’t had the chance to spread her ashes yet. So they sat in a tightly sealed plastic bad in Wearmouth’s closet.
“I didn’t mind having her here in the closet, you know? I spoke to her at night when we went to bed,” said Wearmouth.
His neighbors are angry.
“Whoever took this, I would hope would have the heart to bring it back,” said Sandra Alvarado. “I’m sorry, but it just breaks my heart. It just makes me sick.”
It’s heartbreak, Wearmouth has now suffered twice. First losing his wife to illness, then to thieves. He realizes his chances of getting her back are slim.
“I’d really be pleased if I do, but I have no hope of getting them back,” said Wearmouth.
He just hopes the thieves return his wife.
