Shopper catches fight on camera at metro mall
OKLAHOMA CITY — A video posted on YouTube earlier this week, shows two young men attacking another man inside Quail Springs Mall. It’s hard to watch, as you fear for the safety of shoppers who tried to step in and break it up.
Austin Valentine happened to be in the right place at the right time on Sunday. Unsure of what they were fighting over, he decided the best thing for him to do was to get it all on video.
The fight started inside a store with words. Valentine was nearby just shopping for shoes with his cell phone camera ready to go.
“One of the guys was yelling in the store a lot and another guy came in,” said Valentine. “I’m guessing they were opposing gangs.”
Valentine says the next thing he knew they were going at it. You can hear shoppers in the back ground yelling at them to stop, but what we don’t see are two women who wedged themselves in between the men. They wouldn’t let them near each other which sent them all running off.
“I was too nervous, honestly, because I didn’t know if he had a knife or weapon,” said Valentine. “That girl did, and I’m glad she did, but she’s lucky that nothing else happened.”
He and other shoppers were shocked that mall officials didn’t show up before they did.
“Security was basically non-existent,” said Valentine. “They got there maybe four minutes later.”
Two of the men were already out of the mall by then.
Quail Springs Mall says, “Officials responded immediately and they have a customized public safety program but will not disclose security measures to keep from compromising their efforts.”
They go on to say they “We will not condone the behavior that occurred on Sunday.”
Valentine’s video has had a lot of eyes on it since Sunday, with over 17,000 hits on YouTube, but a lot of people questioning why he decided to stay behind the camera.
“Some people asked me why I didn’t get involved, a lot of people actually,” said Valentine. “I just say I don’t know what that guy would have done to me or that lady if we would have gotten involved.”
In the video it seems like two men were ganging up on one, but Valentine want’s everyone to know that one man is not innocent. He was actually the one to threw the first punch.
There has been some talk that the fight was staged for WORLDSTARHIPHOP, a website that often posts violent fights, but Valentine says these guys were not faking it.
