The countdown to the fall tradition of players putting on the pads, the roar of the crowd and the congestion of trying to park in Norman is underway.
In ten days, August 31, the first home football game of the 2013 season for the University of Oklahoma football team will take place.
To help you avoid delays or other inconveniences; Norman police offer the following information:
Driving: This year, one of the biggest concerns is construction along Interstate 35 from Main Street to the South Canadian River.
The City of Norman’s Traffic Control Division, along with the police department, suggests drivers traveling south on I-35 use either exit 113 (Highway 77, left exit) or exit 112 at Tecumseh Road.
Once off the interstate, motorist may take a variety of north/south thoroughfares to the stadium. City and university officials intend to release a comprehensive plan within the next few days, which will include maps of suggested routes.
Parking: Police also recommend that motorist exercise good judgment when parking before the game.
Traditionally, the police department experiences a dramatic surge in parking- related calls during a home football game.
For example, on a typical weekend, enforcement officials issue only a handful of parking calls, but on a game-day Saturday they can rise to more than a hundred.
Most fines for typical parking violations range from twenty to thirty dollars, but some violations can spoil a great day, when they result in a towed vehicle.
Violations that can result in a towed vehicle include, parking in a tow-away zone or fire lane, blocking a driveway, street, or alley, blocking a fire hydrant, illegal use of handicapped parking, and illegally parking on private property.
Wrecker fees and fines associated with a towed vehicle can become quite expensive. According to wrecker companies, a typical game day often results in twenty to thirty tows.
