COLCORD, Okla. – City officials are warning Colcord residents not to drink the water because of a red worm infestation Tuesday.
The Tulsa World reported Vice Mayor Cody Gibby said the water source may be unsafe for human consumption.
“Bleach doesn’t even kill them,” Gibby said. “We don’t know what we are dealing with.”
The Department of Environmental Quality confirmed the worms are in the water supply and said those in Colcord should not drink the water or use it in food preparation.
Officials in the Delaware County town are providing bottled water to residents at the Colcord Fire Dept.
Gibby said schools have dismissed students and many commercial businesses are closed.
Colcord water officials said the infestation could have started in the open-filter system at the town’s water plant.
Colcord has a population of about 800 and is 80 miles east of Tulsa.
Environmental officials will alert residents when the water is safe to drink again.
They do not have an estimated time frame.
