Tulsa Golden Hurricane kicks off season in Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The 2013 college football season kicks off Thursday night for one of Oklahoma’s three NCAA Division One programs as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane visits the Bowling Green Falcons on national TV (ESPNU at 6 p.m.).
Tulsa enters the game coming off an 11-3 season under third-year head coach Bill Blankenship, a season in which TU won the Conference USA championship game with a victory over Central Florida.
Tulsa welcomes back big Cody Green (6-4, 250) at quarterback.
The transfer from Nebraska has improved a lot in the off-season and the Golden Hurricane will rely on the rushing of RB Trey Watts, the son of former OU star J.C. Watts, who ran for almost 1,000 yards in 2012.
Defensively, Tulsa suffered a blow when starting safety Marco Nelson was ruled ineligible for the opener due to an academic issue.
The school is appealing the ruling with the NCAA and hopes to have the senior secondary star back as soon as possible, certainly in time for Tulsa’s trip to Norman to play the Sooners Sept. 14.
