El Reno tornado downgraded to EF-3

EL RENO, Okla.- Three months after a massive tornado tore through Canadian County, officials with the National Weather Service have downgraded the damage scale of the storm.

Originally, the tornado that hit El Reno on May 31 was measured as an EF-3.

After scientists measured wind speeds that topped 300 miles per hour, they upgraded the scale to an EF-5.

Now, the National Weather Service announced that it is downgrading the twister back to an EF-3.

Officials say the scale is designed to measure the damage left behind in the wake of a storm.

Since this storm hit in a rural and less-densely populated area, it did not create as much damage as an EF-5 normally would create.
