Legally married same-sex couples now eligible for VA benefits
WASHINGTON- In another historic move, the White House announced that legally married same-sex couples are eligible for federal benefits through the military.
The Department of Veterans Affairs says it is working to determine the scope of the decision but believe it will entitle those couples to a full range of benefits.
Officials say the announcement stops the enforcement of two provisions of federal law that defined a surviving spouse as “a person of the opposite sex who was the spouse of a veteran.”
