Police: Suspect starts fire trying to steal copper wire from electrical line
OKLAHOMA CITY – Police are looking for suspects who tried to steal copper wire early Thursday morning.
Officers were called to the 500 block of N.W. 7th St. after someone reported downed power lines along the street.
Authorities say they think someone was trying to steal copper wire by trying to cut a line with a pair of hedge clippers.
While attempting to cut the electrical line, the suspect caused the line to spark.
That spark then set the grass in the area on fire.
Firefighters, along with the Oklahoma City Police Department, responded to the scene after a resident heard a transformer blow.
Fire crews were able to get the blaze under control quickly but that’s when officials spotted the hedge clippers with a hole burned through them.
Rodd Cole, the resident who called 911, said, “It seems to be kind of a problem around here. There’s a renovation going right next door to us with brand new copper lines going into the house and they were just stolen last week.”
Emergency crews searched the area but didn’t find anyone.
However, they say they will be alerted if someone shows up to a hospital with electrical burns.
