Good Samaritan hides $100 bills in grocery stores
SALEM, Ore. – Shoppers in Oregon are looking a little bit closer at the shelves when they head to the grocery store.
Some shoppers in Oregon are randomly finding $100 bills stuffed into items they purchase.
Phil said, “I noticed some cookies on sale, $1.20.”
It was a bargain Phil found at a Wal-Mart in Salem.
However, what was inside the box was a miracle.
He said, “I opened it up and a $100 bill fell out, just like that.”
Feeling lucky, he took a second pass at the cookie section.
He said, “There were three boxes left, so I turned them over and lo and behold there was another $100 bill.”
Phil says every penny will be used for gas money.
He said, “My girlfriend’s in the hospital with renal failure. I’m driving to OHSU every day, so $20 in gas each way. It’s kind of come at a very opportune time for me.”
For Jennifer Smith-Poelz, it was a box of ice cream cones that her kids were begging her to get.
She said, “When we got home, they were getting their ice cream and lo and behold they came running out and they were like, ‘We found $100, $100!’ And I’m like, ‘What? This cannot be real.”
In fact, customers all over town are finding the mysterious money that is hidden inside grocery stores.
Anastasiya Johnson found $100 tucked inside a chocolate bar, which is a golden ticket to support a friend’s missionary work.
Store managers say the money is being found tucked into grocery carts, shopping bags and even egg cartons.
So far, they have counted almost $2,000.
Smith-Poelz said, “I think my kids and I are going to try to decide to do something with it to pay it forward.”
Store officials say they do not know who is behind the hidden money but confirmed the bills were authentic.
