Hold your breath; Doctors making pills from poop to cure gut infections
It may be a gross topic, but, it’s true!
Canadian doctors have created pills made from human feces to cure serious gut infections.
It is a more practical and less repulsive way to do fecal transplants, or using stool from one person to fix a bacterial imbalance in another.
Canadian researchers extracted the bacteria, packed it in capsules and gave it to patients with severe intestinal infections. All 27 were cured after failing to get better on strong antibiotics.
“Each year, more than a half million people get sick from C. difficile, and in recent years, C. difficile infections have become more frequent, severe and difficult to treat.” Research from the MayoClinic.
Doctors believe the pill holds promise.
Further research on the pills was reported Thursday at an infectious disease conference in San Francisco.
