WASHINGTON — Problems continue for millions of Americans trying to learn more about the new Affordable Care Act at through the government website, healthcare.gov
An estimated fifteen million people have logged on to learn more about insurance plans only to find the system is down or too slow to use.
The website woes are making the complicated topic that is the affordable care act even more difficult to understand.
“In terms of appearance, it’s really pretty. It gets an A+. In terms of performance, it gets an F,” said Luke Chung, President and Founder of Software Development Firm.
Outside software engineers say the core design of the website may be flawed.
What should be simple tasks like logging-in and creating an account are giving users grief.
“It looks like the people who built this had never built a commercial database software application before,” said Chung.
Also, there’s been a tremendous amount of interest.
The website had more traffic than the Obama Administration expected, which has slowed it down.
“This is a problem that was driven by an overwhelming demand from people saying i want to be able to sign up for affordable health care, and they’re going to be able to,” said Senior White House Advisor David Simas.
A health and human services spokeswoman says the department won’t stop improving healthcare.gov until its doors are wide open.
But at least some users are.
“I’m not disillusioned by not be able to do this today. I’ve got three months to do this,” said site user Sondra Powell.
Users have until December 15th to sign up if they want coverage to start on January first.
Fifteen states and the District of Columbia have created their own healthcare exchanges and users of those sites seem to be having more success.
However, some who have signed up for a plan now have another problem.
They’re now reporting trouble confirming their doctors will accept their new insurance and which drugs are covered.
