Neighbors calling for action after cars crash into multiple homes
OKLAHOMA CITY – A car crashed into a home in southwest Oklahoma City on Monday afternoon and residents say it’s just the latest indicator of a big problem in the neighborhood.
It happened around 2 p.m. at a home in the 9100 block of Winston Way.
That’s in the Sky Ranch neighborhood, located near S.W. 89th and Western.
April Giddens had just gone into the garage to take her youngest to afternoon prekindergarten when they heard the boom.
“Just shocked really,” said Giddens. “The shelves were knocked over on my truck and I came outside and the truck was in, hit the corner of the garage.”
April’s neighbor across the street, Sam, said the same thing happened to his house about four months ago.
A truck plowed through his fence and slammed into the side of his home around 3 a.m. in the morning.
Sam said, “It hit my son’s bedroom wall and my son was asleep on the other side of that wall.”
The driver tried to escape and ended up flipping the truck in the ditch behind Sam’s house.
Sam’s surveillance camera on the outside of the home captured Monday’s reckless driver crashing into Giddens’ house.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee never even swerves, but crashes straight into the structure.
At one point in time, the female driver tried to take off, running down the street.
But she was eventually apprehended and brought back to the scene.
Sam said, “I won’t even let my kids play out in the front yard because of the way the traffic is at this intersection.”
One of the main problems is a hairpin curve at the entrance to the Sky Ranch neighborhood.
Sam said, “The 25 mile per hour speed limit doesn’t work on that curve. They really need to go no faster than 15.”
Giddens said, “I wish they would put a speed bump or something around this curve to get people to slow down and a lot less accidents would happen around this curve.”
Both April and Sam are hoping this latest incident will force the city to finally do something about the problem.
Police tell us the female driver who crashed into Giddens’ house was a juvenile.
She was taken to the hospital to be checked out and then was expected to be arrested for driving under the influence.
