Tulsa 6-year-old boy died after falling through ice in creek
TULSA, Okla. – According to KJRH, A 6-year-old boy has died after falling through the ice on a south Tulsa creek.
Tulsa police confirmed the child’s death to 2NEWS Saturday evening.
Two boys playing in Joe Creek Saturday afternoon near the 7300 block of South Wheeling around 2 p.m.
A 12-year-old and 6-year-old were playing in Joe Creek behind Foxfire Apartments, when the 6-year-old fell through the ice. The 12-year-old attempted to save him and jumped in.
Officials say the 6-year-old was submerged under ice an inch thick for about 30 minutes. When emergency responders arrived, the 12-year-old had managed to get out of the creek.
Both boys were transported to St. Francis.
The names of the two boys have not been released.
EMSA says the 12-year-old boy is recovering.
Authorities are warning children to stay away from icy waters in these frigid temperatures.
“It’s obviously not uncommon for kids to get around these bodies of water that they live next to it,” said Scott Williams, paramedic and field operations supervisor. “They probably get a level of comfort and see a little bit of ice and don’t realize how dangerous it’s become.”
Officials say the 12-year-old boy was responsive and the 6-year-old was not responsive.
